Problem Coyote Part 7

Posted on 28 December 2010 by trickac

Often portrayed as villains of cartoons and the wild west, coyotes are sometimes no laughing matter to Kentucky livestock farmers. The “Kentucky Afield” TV show will address the risks and effective measures to deal with the species this weekend, September 22 and 23, on KET. The coyote is one of the most wide-ranging and adaptable of all predators. Over the past 25 years, this canine has expanded its range from the western and plains states throughout all of the eastern US, including Kentucky. This weekend, “Kentucky Afield” TV looks at the natural history and the natural migration of this canine to the commonwealth. As coyote numbers and range continue to expand, Kentucky livestock farmers could experience the occasional problem. Chet Hayes with United Trappers of Kentucky and Bennie Bailey of Kentucky Fur Trappers provide timely advice on trapping the species as the furbearer trapping season approaches its Nov. 12 opener. Viewers will also learn what measures are available to deal with problem coyotes outside of the legal trapping season.

@luv2spd … you use an AR15 in what caliber exactly? you do know that the AR15 model is just a particular model right? And that it can be chambered in a variety of different rounds.

    .223 .22-250 and .243 does well too

  7. ohiodeerhunter21 Says:

your wrong about that but most hunters prefer to use a higer caliber that a .22

  8. IFwetrust1 Says:

the jaw spread might be a little small, i prefer a no. 2 or no. 3 but if i were you i wouldnt try for them in anything smaller than a no. 2, but if 1 1/2 coilsprings are all you have availible they should work fine

an honerable and almost lost tradition, most people dont even have a clue that at one time America’s major income came from trapping and fur production

  14. greenteam243 Says:

Would a duke 1 1/2 coil spring hold a coyote?

    thanks

  15. Retrieverman1 Says:

I bet Chet Hayes knows more about these fur-bearers than many biologists.

  16. northshorerathunta Says:

nope, get a centerfire .22….rimfires dont have the range or power to ethically kill a yote.

  17. cuff1957 Says:

i set up claymore mines, when the live stock or the family pets get to close to my pet coyote i blow them up long live the coyote.

  18. y2p1988 Says:

personall .17hmr with belistic tips to thevitals or head. Haven’t not dropped one in one shot yet. But if you have the money .223, or 22-250 work great for long shots.

  19. wakawaka74 Says:

I recommend .223, rounds are cheap and it will get the job done.

  20. artheina Says:

yeh man 243. is a good gun…and iv been looking for a 22-250 for coyote hunting

  21. lovUSAhj Says:

yeah, knock him down them take care of em.. you can easily knock over a coyote with a 22 or 17. If you can pop them in the head, that should do the trick.

  22. wafelturkey Says:

try barnes varmit grenade it should solve your problem

  23. xXfeevesXx Says:

nah get a 22-250 or if you think about deer hunting get a 243

  24. luv2spd Says:

No, get yourself a .223 or similar varmint round. Its a great excuse to buy another gun! I would seriously discourage the use of a .22 and even a .22 mag as they might not make a clean kill. Personally, I use an AR15 and its a great rifle for coyote hunting. Extremely accurate and followups are easy.
