Ichikisu at the Range – Remington 700 Varmint Tactical Rifle (VTR)

Posted on 13 December 2010 by trickac

Brand new rifle I own and finally got money to pay for. Always wanted to own a Remington since I’m a Remington “fanboy”. The Remington 700VTR is one heck of a beauty right out of the box. Took her to the range on November 21st, 2009 to the Regina Wildlife Federation shooting range to test out the various ammunition and decide on which brand I would use for the hunting season. It was unfortunate that I ran out of time before I could get out to hunt any deer as there was one specific buck I was going to hunt. There’s always next year after all. Anyways, this rifle is chambered for .308 caliber, has an integrated muzzle-brake, has Remington’s Recoil Reduction Pad built right into the stock, and is hinged plated magazine system. I was able to score a Harris Bipod made by Rocky Arms and still had my A1Optics 8-32x50mm rangefinding illuminated reticule scope. Added a Remington real tree camo sling for the heck of it as we are wide open prairies after all. Those long walks can be disastrous for rifles if they are not cared for. I am quite impressed with how the rifle shot. If you notice during the video that the rifle barrel never once lifted when fired. I had this very problem with the Savage Arms FC111XP that I used to own and accuracy was hard to control. That wasn’t the case with the 700VTR. Shot nice and steady keeping the barrel level at all times allowing me to keep focus through the scope without losing sight of the target and the recoil pad took most of the recoil. Felt

It works great for me. Too some time to get used to using a bigger focal plane but I’m able to make good use of the field of view it has. Good for follow up shots. Low light situations are no problems either. Just don’t get caught in the sun though.

I can very much agree to that mate.

Gotta love breaking in some new steel! .308 is a great all around cartridge to use, my personal favorite. I also like Remingtons, they make the smoothest bolt actions for the money in my mind. I own a model 722 (.222 cal), great flat shooting groundhog gun, also a Genesis muzzleloader which shoots just as goo as my uncles TC Omega

how much recoil would this gun have with a 26″ barrel and a muzzle brake?

  8. Ichikisu Says:

You’re very welcome mate. That’s the main reason I share my experience with others is so that if something isn’t working for them and they never thought of trying something else, it may just work for them what they see in my videos.

I see no problem with the barrel not being fluted but this is one solid barrel and a heavy one at that. Works great when using the right ammo. ;-)

I sure hope to harvest a buck and a couple of does for next year. Missed the hunting season by a day.

i just got the same gun but its the one with the normal 26” barrel. i like it but after this video i like it more because u just helped me find the better ammo for it. i was using the winchesters and i wasnt really please with it. i do like the gun though its just a shame that it isnt a free floated barrel i might do that myself eventually. I already harvested a seven point buck with it this last deer season and hope to get more and hope the same for you. Thanks for the great review.

I got it locally. Rouky Mountain I think was the actual brand (might have made an error during the editing on that) and it was the 6″-9″ non-pivot Harris Bipod. Very very solid and works great with my rifle.

Been thinkin’ about gettin’ the .223 version to compliment this rifle. I’ve never shot that calibre as I’m used to the big cals.

It is indeed one sweet rifle eh?

i have the same model but mine is a 223
m700 busnell scope 40mm single cross hairs
    nothing special
everytime i pull the trigger its like poking butter then it just breaks and BAM
it just looks diffrent in the video. where did you get that bipod i like it alot.

  15. Ichikisu Says:

Thanks mate. Actually if you look a little more closely, I’m actually pulling until the trigger “breaks”. Once I have my shot lined up, I just squeeze from softly to hard until it goes off. Remington is spot on with their claim that the trigger breaks like glass. It really does have that feel. You’d have to try it to believe it. If I remember correctly they said they had it at 4.7lbs factory trigger pull. I really am loving the rifle for it’s trigger pull mostly. Such a nice feeling I tell ya.

  16. kingwilly1000 Says:

    pull the trigger slower
it should supprise you when it goes off
    other than that good work
