2008 World Predator Calling Champion Interview

Posted on 14 December 2010 by trickac

Predator Xtreme’s editor, Ralph Lermayer, interviews Jon Paul Moody, 2008 World Predator Calling Champion, at the World Predator & Hunting Expo in Overland Park, Kansas.
Video Rating: 4 / 5

Evaluation of the Hornady TAP 75 grain load for .223 Remington. Includes shooting groups on steel at a laser-measured 100 and 200 yards (showing scope perspective at 200), and water jug test at 100 yards. Platform is the AR15 Bushmaster Varminter with 24″ barrel. Chronographed velocity from this rifle was 2780 fps, slightly lower than Hornady’s published velocity (2790 fps and test barrel length not revealed)….but impressive for this bullet weight/caliber combination. Although it really isn’t marketed as such, this load would probably perform well on coyotes and other large varmints. This is definitely one of my favorite “heavier” loads for .223 Remington.

    Now why did I think this would be about SciFi geeks at a movie convention?

  8. asssface2000 Says:

    @aramarine6 thats what i thought. i have a bolt gun in .223…………..i order .223 ammo and get 5.56 ammo in the mail. if the rifle blows up i think i can sue several companies.

    @10mmTroy When you treat the cases with
    vaseline before shooting ? Hmmm… this is
    what the dealer said me to do before shooting
    the rifle but I didn’t trust him and just shot the
    rifle SSG 82 in 5,45×39 without lubricating them
    with vaseline. What is right now ? Treat the
    cases with the vaseline or without it ? After
    5 shots on cartridge case jammed totally and
    2 shooting comerades needed to help me getting
    it out again…

  10. Sportschuetze84 Says:

    @10mmTroy Wow, this is just awesome with
    the FNAR. I’ve heard about shooting comerades
    who made very good experiences with a customized
    Remington 700 shooting 1 3/4 till 2 inch groups at
    300meters. Is it good ? I mean as hunter one need
    to shoot well. And TAP is very good, I know but A-Max
    too. ^^

  11. 10mmTroy Says:

    @Sportschuetze84
    This can increase bolt thrust when the rounds are being put in the chamber and cause damage to the weapon.

  12. 10mmTroy Says:

    TAP is the most superior ammunition available for terminal affect and accuracy, keep in mind it is also match ammunition. I used it last night to shoot coyote out of my FNAR – 300m shot, dead right there. No exit wound. Same with the fat raccoon I shot on my walk out. Amazing ammunition – the best.

  13. 10mmTroy Says:

    @tnoutdoors9
    Keep in mind that mainline troops shoot 62GR FMJ which is vastly inferior in terms of terminal effect compared to ammunition that is available commercially and I’ve never heard a serious complaint about lack of lethality from a combat arms soldier.

    All the talk of .223/5.56 being a round suitable only for rabbits is internet bullshit and Call of Duty shit.

  14. Sportschuetze84 Says:

    @MrROTTENJUGGALO It is a little rifle
    cartridge which is hard to beat and has
    enough penetration power, I know but
    there must be an alternative to it like
    5,45×39 in a long barrel like of RPK 74.
    I shot SSG 82 5,45×39 and precision
    was awesome but weapon craved sadly.
    Take allways vaseline when using steel cased
    cartridge. Ammo is cheaper but needs more
    preparation time (cover the cases with vaseline)
    or one gets severe jamming. Russians do it the
    same way for avoiding this.

  15. MrROTTENJUGGALO Says:

    @camelkiller22 1×9 is the standard and will handle 75s just fine i have hit targets at 1000 yds with 5 mph wind its like a 22lr when it gets thair but it will work.

  16. MrROTTENJUGGALO Says:

    @Sportschuetze84 223 has about 3000 fps with a 55 gr pill and over 1000 foot pounds of energy on target don’t be disappointed it’s not the biggest but it will do some fuckin damage on target I certainly wouldn’t want to get hit with one. To give you a comparison a .45 cal acp has a 230gr pill with about 800 fps but only 450 foot pounds of energy. 223 is double that with over 3 times the velocity.

  17. tnoutdoors9 Says:

    @sprn45

    Technically, they are not. Try shooting 5.56 in a gun chambered only for .223 Remington. Actually, please do NOT try it. Pressure in the 5.56 is higher, chamber dimensions are different, etc. It is ESSENTIAL to know whether or not your .223 Remington rifle will handle 5.56 mm. All of my AR’s will.

  18. blackhatch46 Says:

    @maxdura007 yea but you can shoot a .223 out of a 5.56 chamber rifle. bc the 5.56 is higher pressure.

  19. maxdura007 Says:

    @sprn45 you are wrong my friend. not trying to be an ass. but do your homework. you should never NEVER NEVER shoot 5.56 out of a .223.

  20. AllfatherGuideUs Says:

    This video is awesome @Tnoutdoors9 – shows exactly why the 5.56 is so effective on soft targets. The explosive energy and fragmentation on soft targets are the reason the military adopted the SCHV round in the first place.

  21. Chevyracing000 Says:

    The projectiles are the same it’s the case thats diffrent. 5.56 thicker case-less powder, .223 Rem. thinner case-more powder.

  22. Titanium181991 Says:

    @sprn45 Nope, as jebustheone stated, they are not the same. 5.56 run at higher pressures than .223, and the differ in size slightly. shoot 5.56 through a barrel labelled .223 and see what happens. It won’t be good.

  23. Erik0072 Says:

    excellent review, one of the most professional on yt.

  24. Erik0072 Says:

    @sprn45 incorrect, you could destroy a gun or cause serious injury providing that information

  25. Robertgriffin78 Says:

    what grip is that

  26. jebustheone Says:

    @sprn45 .223 and 5.56 have different chambers/leades.

    Not the same.

  27. Sportschuetze84 Says:

    @SupremeAmerican The 22 hornet seems to be a good
    solution for rabits and all kind of small game. ^^

  28. SupremeAmerican Says:

    @Sportschuetze84 oo i love 22 hornet

  29. sprn45 Says:

    .223 and 5.56 are the same

  30. Sportschuetze84 Says:

    @TheProRifle Hmmm…. a good hunter can
    take many game with the right rifle/shot
    placement but ahhh, Idk You know the 450
    Bushmaster ? I’ve seen some pig hunts…
    whether it was 223 Rem., 308 Win., 30-06 Spr.
    the pigs allways did as they run after they’ve
    become hit. Now a German hunter had
    a bullet over 8mm and BOOOM, pig jumped
    only once – dead. So it is may be more fair to
    let the pigs suffer less hopely. But it is too a
    great bullet against grizzlies when becomming
    surprised by one. =)

  31. Sportschuetze84 Says:

    @SupremeAmerican Yeah, saw some pics from
    222 Rem. and it was just nice. Hmmm… may be
    22. hornet is better for rabbits.
